Year 5 Residential
The year 5 residential will take place 21st – 25th June 2021 although children will only attend for three days/two nights of this. Children from 5W will go Monday 21st – Wednesday 23rd June and children from 5L will go Wednesday 23rd – Friday 25th June. Wednesday will be the changeover day.
Staffing will be:
Mon-Wed: Miss Wetherill, Mr Harris, Mrs Wallace, Mrs du Preez, Mrs Hawkhead
Wed-Fri: Miss Levett, Mr Hemming, Mrs du Preez, Mrs Hawkhead, Miss Saunders, Miss Carter
Our school staff is supplemented by Charlie Pyatt and Phil Jackson who will lead the caving, and Chris Young who will lead the cycling at Gisburn Forest.
Objectives of residential:
- To provide the children with experience of time away from the family home
- To develop responsibility for self: room, belongings, preparations for activities, cooking, cleaning, meeting challenges
- To provide experience of outdoor adventurous activity in the form of caving, off road biking and low-level Dales walking
- To understand the water cycle, features of rivers and basic geology
- To improve skills in OS map reading
- To appreciate some of the history of the Carlisle to Settle railway and Ribblehead viaduct

The children will be dropped by minibus at Beezley Café and walk towards Twistleton Hall and join the Waterfall Walk. If the weather is nice, children will get to have a paddle near the end of the walk.
The children will spend half a day cycling at Gisburn Forest. Bikes and helmets will be provided. This activity will be led by Chris Young from British Cycling supported by school staff.
The children will spend half a day caving at Long Churn caves near Settle. All kit will be provided. This activity will be led by Charlie Pyatt and/or Phil Jackson with support from school staff.
The children will take part in a dusk walk close to the lodge.
The children will complete a river study walk to Winterscales Beck. We expect to sit and watch sand martins in a land sand bank.
Children will travel by school minibus or train.

School have prepared the appropriate paperwork for the local authority to approve the trip. Documents will include: risk assessments, itinerary, kit list, staffing, emergency contact details etc…
A meeting giving full details of the 2021 year 5 residential will be held remotely, on Wednesday 26th May at 6pm.
A pack of paperwork including parental consent forms and kit order forms has been sent home to parents. Please complete and return these forms by Friday 28th May 21 at the latest.
