English

The children have been very busy this week in their English lessons. We started the week off by looking at improving our sentence openers. The children were really enthusiastic with their suggestions and we constructed some really ambitious sentences. Our main focus was adverbials and the children showed a great understanding of this concept.

We then moved onto planning out sci-fi story using a storyboard planning method. The children drew small pictures of each stage of their story and included some key words and phrases to accompany the pictures. The planning is really imaginative and I am looking forward to seeing the final drafts of the stories next week.

Have a go at writing your own adverbial sentences about the picture below – remember to leave your comment at the bottom of the blog!

Maths

In maths this week we have been looking at division. The children used the ‘bus stop’ method to solve written calculations. They proved to be very good at this method and we moved onto problem solving really quickly. The children showcase their understanding well and some of us even looked at converting our remainders into decimals! Well done all for a fantastic week of maths!

Next week we will be looking at prime and square numbers.

Science

In Science this week we looked at how the planets orbit the sun. The children created their very own orbital model and the used this to explain what orbit means. The children really grasped this understanding and help me demonstrate this further with footballs and tennis balls. One was the sun, one the Earth and the other the moon. We explored how long Earth’s orbit of the Sun takes and why we have day and night. The children wrote some very good explanations and used a wide range of scientific vocabulary.

Who knows how long Jupiter’s orbit of the Sun takes?

Hope that you all have a lovely weekend,

Miss Jones

I enjoyed science because we made our orbital model. It showed how the Earth goes round the sun. When the Earth was going round the sun, it was carrying the moon round it to.
